Luke 23: 1-12
We come to a common human trait in today’s passage: passing the buck.
Neither Herod nor Pilate knew what to do with Jesus, so they expected
their counterpart to deal with Him instead. Pilate famously states he
finds "no guilt in this man”. Herod, at first eager to see Jesus, joined
with others in mocking the Messiah.
It puzzles me how two leaders, acting of their own volition, could see a
man’s innocence yet condemn and mock Him anyway. These two men
were to be leaders by example, yet instead gave into peer pressure from
a small group of loud objectors. God’s will was accomplished through
their ambivalence, but it doesn’t make their behavior less contemptible.
The opportunity to stand on truth eluded those who could have changed
a sinful pattern. Instead, a murderous journey continued.
May we live, lead, and serve differently than these two leaders. May we
with great confidence, stand on the truth of Who Jesus Is and what He
has done, is doing, and will do.
What has Jesus already done?
What hav you seen Him do this season?
What are you looking forward to Him doing in the days to come?
